PDFs accumulate weight quickly — scanned pages can be several MB each, embedded fonts add overhead, and high-resolution images rarely need full fidelity in distribution copies. The PDF Compressor strips redundant data streams, downsamples embedded images, and removes unnecessary metadata to make documents email- and upload-ready.
A 20 MB scanned PDF typically reduces to 3–5 MB with image resampling at 150 DPI — sufficient for comfortable screen reading. Text-only or vector PDFs see minimal reduction since their data is already compact. Heavy compression on scanned documents trades sharpness for size.
Scanned PDFs are essentially image collections, so image downsampling provides the most compression. A 150 DPI resample typically achieves 60–80% file size reduction on scan-heavy documents.
Text layers are vector-based and are not affected by image compression. Only embedded photos or scanned images lose fidelity. Text-only PDFs see minimal size reduction but unchanged readability.
Our compressor works on unlocked, open PDFs only. Password-restricted documents need to be unlocked first before the compressor can access the internal content streams.
